1. Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima shrine is a popular Shinto shrine which is best known for it’s iconic “floating” tori gate. The Itsukushima Shrine is dedicated to Susano-o Mikoto’s three daughters, the sea and storm Shinto gods, and Amaterasu’s brother. Throughout most of the Shrine’s history, commoners were never allowed to set foot on the island since it is a sacred island. By keeping commoners from setting foot on the island, they believed they were keeping the island pure.


2. Mount Misen

Mount Misen is the sacred mountain of Miyajima and is most famously known for being visited by Kukai, a famous Japanese Buddhist monk, in the year 806. There are a number of Buddhist structures near Mount Misen’s summit. Along the paths of the mountain, Deer can be spotted at times. And although it is very rare, monkeys can also be spotted at times. Monkey sightings used to be common on these paths, however, because of the sudden increase in their population they had to be relocated to a monkey park in Inuyama.


3. Daisho-in Temple

The Daisho-in temple is known to be extremely important part of the Shingon Buddhist religion. This temple can be found at the base of Mount Misen where its founder, Kobo Daishi is said to have first began practicing Buddhism on Miyajima. The temple grounds include a Maniden Hall, Kannon-do Hall, a tea room, and a cave that contains icons that represent all the different temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage.



4. Deer Interaction

Miyajima is home to more than a thousand friendly deer. According to local folklore, the deer were believed to be gods messengers. Since these deer are considered to be Japan’s national treasures, it is said that killing them was punishable by death until 1637. Although not as harsh today, it still considered to be a serious crime to kill these deer. In some places of Japan, the deer tend to shy away from humans, however, on Miyajima they are extremely comfortable interacting with human beings.

Momiji Manju is a traditional maple leaf shaped Japanese sweet that is filled with red bean paste and wrapped in a castella-like dough. Momiji manju can be found anywhere in Hiroshima and is a very popular souvenir gift.

Deep fried momiji manju is also a very popular treat. There are a variety of different fillings in which you can choose from.

Oysters are considered to be one of the most famous seafood dish in Hiroshima. Miyajima is known for having many oyster farms and they are famous for having above-average sized oysters that are also very tender and juicy.
