One of the most popular guest houses in Kyoto is the Khaosan Kyoto. It is a very big guest house and there are actually 12 different branches all across Japan. There are branches in places like Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Kanazawa and Atami. The one in Kyoto is in a very good location as it is in the central area of Kyoto. It is also a very convenient location as there are lots of big department stores near by and lots of convenience stores, 100 yen shops, super markets, banks and post offices within walking distance to the guest house. So if you ever need anything you have access to everything! This guest house also has laundry machines, showers, wi-fi. lockers, information service, computers and a kitchen. So if you want to save money by cooking instead of eating out you can definitely do so. This guest house also holds different tours and events which you are welcome to join. Unfortunately they don’t have a bicycle rental service but there is one right near the guest house.

Another popular guest house in Kyoto is the Shiori Ann. This is a fairly newer guest house ad it is a traditional Kyoto townhouse that was renovated into a guest house. It is also in a great location as it is only 1 minutes away from the Gojo station and about a 10 minute walk from the Kyoto station. As you may be using the train a lot to get to different places it is great being walking distance from Kyoto station as Kyoto has all the different train lines that will get to where you need to go. This guest house has a mixed dormitory room and also a female only dormitory which are 2,900 yen. Each bed in the dormitory has a curtain and also outlets to charge your devices. Of course it has been renovated in some ways but it still has a very traditional feel to it. The architecture of the building is absolutely beautiful. It is also located in the Geisha district and is only a few minutes walk from the Higashiyama station. There are also lots of restaurants and convenience stores in the area. This guest house has dormitory rooms. twin Japanese style rooms, twin Western style rooms. So you can choose whichever one works best for you. Another old traditional Japanese townhouse that has been renovated into a guest house is the Guest House Kioto. This is located near the Kinkakuji Temple. It’s a bit further away as it is a 30 minute bus ride away from Kyoto station and then a few minutes walk away from the bus station. But if the Kinkakuji is one of the places that you plan on going then this is a great place for you to stay. There are also a bunch of sightseeing locations near by such as the Senbon Shaka-do Temple, the Kamishichiken Kaburenjo Theatre, and the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. This house is also very traditional looking. It is just like a house that a local would stay in so it really is great to see what the inside of a traditional Japanese house looks like. The other great thing about this place is that there is a onsen only a two minute walk away from the guest house. So it’s great to relax at the onsen after a whole day of sightseeing. The dormitory rooms here are 2,700 yen. A private Japanese style room with a futon is 4,000 yen and a private western style room with beds is 3,800 yen. They also have bicycle rentals and serve a Japanese style breakfast every morning.

Traveling throughout Japan is definitely much more expensive compared to a lot of other Asian countries but you can definitely find cheaper options like the guest houses that I listed above. There are some Airbnb places in Japan as well but there are not a lot to choose from and a lot of them are usually pretty highly priced. Japan is great with hospitality so i’m sure that you’ll find a lot of these guest houses to be very clean.
