All about Naoshima
If you are in Tokyo and you are planning on traveling to Naoshima then you can easily hop on the Shinkansen (bullet train) all the way to Okayama. The train ride will take about 3 and a half to 4 hours. From Okayama station you will need to take the JR Uno Line to Uno station. From Uno station you can walk over the the ferry terminal where you will need to take a ferry to the Miyanoura Port in Naoshima. Once you arrive in Naoshima there are shuttle busses that you can take to get around and be dropped off at your accommodation. And if you are staying at the Bennesse House then there will be a private shuttle bus that will be waiting for you.
Once you have settled into where you are staying you may wonder what the best way to get around the island is. The easiest way to get around the island would be to cycle around. You can easily rent one and it would probably be best to rent an electric bike because it is definitely a lot easy and you will not have to struggle in the hilly areas. There are tons of maps that are available which will make it a lot easier for you to navigate your way around the island. You could also take a shuttle bus as well but if you want to be on your own schedule then it would be best to rent a bicycle.
There are a few different museums on the island and a whole bunch of artwork that you can find outdoors as well. The most popular is the Chichu Art Museum which was designed by Tadao Ando and is an amazing concrete gallery. It is a mixture of art, architecture and landscape. Another recommendation would be to view the sunset from the Open Sky which is absolutely stunning. But it would be best to book seats beforehand so that you can get the best view of the sunset.
When you are looking for a place to stay in Naoshima there are a few different options. The Benesse House and Museum obviously is a popular choice but it is also very expensive as well. So If you don’t want to break the bank then it would be best to find a lodge on Naoshima island. The lodge will most likely just be a tatami room with futons and it will most likely be a shared shower and bathroom but it will be a lot less money compared to the Benesse House and Museum. However, if you are willing to splurge then the Oval suites at the Benesse House are the best but as there are limited rooms they do fill up quickly so make sure to book in advance.

There are a few places that you can go and eat but since the island is not extremely big it is limited. There is a bakery with delicious fresh bread and also little coffee shops where you can get some fresh coffee. There are also a few other cafes that are great for having lunch or dinner. There is also a delicious Okonomiyaki place which for those of you who don’t know what Okonomiyaki is it is an Osaka dish which is pretty much like Japanese style pancakes but instead of being sweet it has vegetables, eggs and a sauce that you put on top.
