Zao Fox Village in Shiroishi, Japan has become one of the most popular places to visit in Japan. This fox village has the most beautiful foxes where you can pet, take pictures with and give treats to the foxes. There are a total of 6 different breeds at this village.
In order to get to the Fox Village you will need to take a bullet train to the Shiroishi Zao Station. Then there is a JR tourism office outside of the shinkansen gate where you can catch a cab that will get you to the fox village. It is a 30 to 40 minute drive from the station to the fox village. And the way to the village you will come across some of the most breathtaking views.
When you get to the gate of the village you will need to get an entrance ticket which will cost 1000 yen for anyone over the age of 13. People under the age of 13 will be free of charge. There are bags of treats that you can buy that are 100 yen per bag.
In the first part of the village you will come across few cages with foxes in them. There will also be foxes with collar leashes. There is also a petting area for other animals like bunnies, goats and mini horses.
Following the petting zoo area of the village you will come across the area where the foxes roam around freely. You can get a very adorable view of foxes that are taking a nap or some that are eating or some that are playing with each other.
There is a designated area where you are allowed to feed the foxes so make sure to feed them only in that area. And make sure to not tease the foxes when you give them their treats because they are still wild foxes.
The estimated time it takes to get around the whole village is about an hour and a half for an average group of people. There are lots of beautiful scenery and also a gift shop that you can spend some time at as well.
This is an extremely rare and interesting experience so it is definitely worth making the trip to the Fox Village.
There are some other things that you should know before visiting the fox village. Make sure that you wear boots if you are going during the winter time because there will be a lot of snow. You can only get to the fox village by car or bus. If you are going by taxi from the station to the fox village it will cost approximately 4,000 yen.
In the petting zoo area you can touch the foxes as they have been domesticated but in the other areas they have not been domesticated so make sure that you do not pet the foxes in the other area. Also, make sure that you do not bring food to the fox village because you will not be allowed to bring it in. There are also no places to eat in the area so make sure to eat before coming.
There is a bus that connects from Shiroishi station to Kawarago Dam every Tuesady and Friday. When you take this bus you will need to get off at the Zao Kitsune Mura stop so make sure to ask the bus driver to stop there. On the way back to the Shiroishi station you will need to take the Kawarago Dam bus. The bus fare will be 200 yen. So this is a much cheaper option than taking a taxi.
The option would be to reserve a shuttle bus. The Yakushi no Yu Shuttle Bus runs everyday but you will need to reserve the shuttle bus three days in advance.
