Hakodate Hokkaido Guide for Tourists

Hakodate is a port city located in Hokkaido. As a trade port, this city flourished for many years and there are lots of buildings there that have a combination of European and other international cultures together and the Japanese culture. Many people find this city to be very charming as it has amazing views both during the day and at night.

One place to go for the view is Mount Hakodate. It has one of the most stunning night views which you can get to by taking the ropeway from the base of the mountain. It takes about three minutes using the ropeway to get to the summit. You can see the city lights all concentrated in one area with the pitch black ocean.

If you are a morning person then I would recommend going to the Morning Market in Hakodate. It is right outside of the Hakodate station and you can get some of the freshest seafood here. There are restaurants here where you can enjoy bowls of seafood using the fresh seafood that is caught that day. There is also one shop where they allow visitors to fish for squid the squid that you catch is sliced into sashimi right on the spot for you to enjoy.

The morning market not only has seafood, it also has a bunch of fruits and vegetables that they sell as well. You can find many shops that have some of the most delicious seasonal fruits in sweets. There are also some shops where you can shop for household goods.

When you are in Hakodate, I would highly recommend going to the Goryokaku which is a very popular sightseeing spot. At the end of the Edo period, the Goryokaku was built which was a fort that is now open as a park.

This Goryokaku fort has a very unique shape to it as it is shaped as a giant store. There is a reason for why it was made in this shape and that is so there are no blind spots made when any enemies attacked. In each point of the star an artillery unit was installed so that they could be fully prepared in case there were any invasions trying to be made.

The surrounding area of the fort is now a park which has cherry blossoms that bloom during the spring season and has beautiful red and yellow autumn leaves covering the park grounds during the fall season. There is a Goryokaku Tower located next to the park where you can get a view overlooking the goryokaku. You can also get souvenirs on the first floor of the tower.

The other place to go for a great view during the day and at night is the Hachimanzaka Slope. This is a hilly road that will take you straight to the port. During the winter season the trees are all covered in lights which make it a very romantic stroll.

There is a shopping complex known as the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse that once used to be a storehouse. People come here to do their shopping which they can get fashion items or household goods. This whole area is illiuminated at night which makes for a perfect picture especially when it snows in the winter time.
