Odaiba Rainbow Bridge
Odaiba Rainbow Bridge
There are lots of famous bridges across the world including the London Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, Harbour Bridge and more. Many of these bridges have become one of the most attractive parts of the city that has attracted tourists from all over the world. Tokyo has their very own bridge called the Rainbow Bridge. The thing that makes the Tokyo Rainbow Bridge different from the Harbour Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge is that it is pedestrian friendly and will not cost you anything to walk across. So although it is a long bridge you can enjoy the view from the rainbow bridge by walking across it.

And not only does it have a fantastic view, it also connects the Tokyo mainland to Odaiba which is known for having amusement centres, shopping area, exhibitions halls and lots of restaurants. And in Odaiba there is a beach area from where you can get a clear view of the Rainbow Bridge. In the afternoon, when the sun sets the sky turns into a beautiful colour. So on a nice summer day you can sit by the beach while watching the sun set.
During the Meiji and Taisho period, there were man-made islands that were made in order to protect Tokyo from any attacks. And once World War II ended, these man made islands were turned into a residential and recreational area.
The Rainbow Bridge is about 1.7 kilometers from Shibauru Gate on the mainland to Daiba Park Gate. It takes approximately 30 minutes to walk so it is just the right amount of time to enjoy a leisurely walk while taking in the view. Although the bridge is all white, at night it is illuminated into a bunch of different colours like red, white and green. It is beautiful both at night and during the day.

There are two walkways on the bridge. A north and south side. From the north side you can see the view of the Tokyo harbour and also Tokyo Tower. And on the south side you get a view of the bay. And if you are lucky, on a clear day you can even get a view of Mount Fuji!

Once you go across the bridge you can get to a big shopping mall called Decks Tokyo. It has a bunch of different shops and includes a theme park, Joypolis, Legoland Discovery Centre and a Madam Tussauds Wax Museum. There is so much to do at this shopping mall. There is another shopping mall nearby called the Aqua City. This too has a bunch of different shops, a theatre and a food court with a bunch of different foods. There is also a mall called Diver City that has a big Gundam Style statue in front of it.

As mentioned earlier in this blog, Odaiba was originally made for defending Tokyo against attacks. It was made in the 1970’s but it wasn’t until the 1990s that the Tokyo Governor started making major development plans. It was his dream to make this THE place that people would want to live and go to. However, the plans to do this had to be put on hold because of the economic crisis in the 1990s. In the late 1990’s they resumed the plans and it became a huge tourist area especially with the famous Fuji Television moved their headquarters to Odaiba.
