Places in Okinawa

Okinawa is the southernmost prefecture of Japan and it consists of a few dozen different small islands. There are three main island groups in which Okinawa can be divided into which are 1. The Okinawa Shoto around the Okinawa Honto, the Miyako Retto around the Miyako Island and the Yaeyama Retto around the Ishigaki Island.

Okinawa is a very subtropical type of climate with temperatures that will hardly ever fall below 15 degrees even during the winter time. The water around the Okinawa islands are so incredibly beautiful and is even known to have some of the most abundant marine wildlife and coral reefs. Therefore, it has become a very popular location to go scuba diving and snorkeling and has attracted many tourists from all over the world.

Okinawa is known for being very different from other parts of Japan in terms of language, arts, cuisine, lifestyle and so on.

Okinawa, for several centuries, was an independent Kingdom and a tributary state to China. In the 17th century, the Satsuma feudal fief took control of the Ryuku Islands and was made into a prefecture in 1879 in the efforts to assimilate their native population. Although, there were hard efforts made to assimilate these native people, the Ryukyuan culture has survived.

Near the end of World War 2, Okinawa was the location that became the stage for one of the worst battles of the war. The American troops had invaded the islands and until 1972 the islands remained in control by the US administration. Today, there is still an American military base on the main island of Okinawa so the area is very Americanized in many ways.

Here are some of the recommended islands to visit while you are in Okinawa:

Miyako Island: This island is located south of the Main Island and is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Japan. So if you are looking for a place to go snorkelling and diving then Miyako Island is the place to go to.

Okinawa is definitely different from other parts of Japan. It is very laid back and they have very beautiful music, delicious food, and very nice people. You’ll see a lot of places that have a mix between Japanese culture and American culture which is for sure something interesting to see. If you travel to other parts of Japan such as the big cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima etc you’ll see that there’s not much nature or wildlife that you see. Of course if you go to certain areas you’ll see nature and wildlife but it’s definitely not so common. So it’s interesting to see how different Okinawa is from the rest of Japan.
