There are many pocket wifi devices that you can choose from in Japan. To make your decision a little bit easier i’ve provided all the information that you should know when choosing a pocket wifi.

Softbank Fee: The rental fee for the Softbank pocket wifi is 840 yen per day and you have 3GB plus capping.

Genki Mobile Fee: Genki Mobile has two different pocket wifi plans that you can choose from which is 300 yen per day for 1GB per day plus 200 kbps capping. You can also choose a 500 yen per day plan which give you 2GB per day plus 200 kbps capping. If you plan on renting a pocket wifi for 60 days or more then you can go with the 200 yen per day plan that will give you 1GB per day plus 200 kbps capping.

Initial Fee: Softbank charges 315 yen for each contract as the initial fee. Genki Mobile on the other hand charges 3,000 yen for the activation fee.

Delivery costs: Softbank charges for the delivery fee. So whether it is a delivery to the airport, hotel or airbnb it will cost a delivery fee. For one SIM card it is 1,000 yen, two SIM cards is 1,500 yen, three SIM cards is 1,890 yen, four or more is 500 yen times the number of rental items. Genki Mobile on the other hand provides free airport deliveries and deliveries to your designated location and free pickup at the Genki Mobile office. If you would like an Express Delivery to be made within the 23 wards of Tokyo then this will cost 1,500 yen. Softbank also makes you pay the delivery costs when returning the rental SIM card. And Genki Mobile provides a free return package so it will not cost you to delivery it back to them.

Insurance: Softbank has an insurance that you can add as an option which is 220 yen per day. Genki Mobile on the other hand does not have an insurance option.

Compensation: Softbank compensation is different depending on whether you pay for the insurance plan or not. If you are not insured then the pocket wifi device will cost 43,200 yen if it is lost or broken. The charger is 2,160 yen. The Rental bag is 3,240 yen. The SIM card is 5,400 yen and the battery is 6,480 yen. And if you are insured the pocket wifi device is 21,600 yen. The charger is 0 yen,  the rental bag is 0 yen and the battery is 0 yen. The SIM card will be 5,400 yen. For Genki Mobile, you will be charged 20,000 yen if the pocket wifi is lost or broken. The SIM card is 3,000 yen. The AC Adapter is 2,000 yen. The Portable case is 1,000 yen. The USB Cable is 1,000 yen and the portable battery is 5,000 yen.

Coverage: It has been known that Docomo has the best coverage in Japan. Whereas Softbank is known to be a bit problematic when it comes to connection is rural areas or underground.

Customer Service: Softbank does have a Japanese customer service that you can call and an email address that you can send an email to. Genki Mobile has a phone number that you can call plus they have a contact form as well as a online chat that is active during office hours.
