Getting Away From the Crowds in Tokyo

Tokyo is a very familiar destination to a lot of people especially places like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Sensoji Temple, Harajuku and the Meiji jingu shrine. These places are visited by tourists every day and many of these places are photographed and shared all over the internet. So i’m sure that everyone will recognize these places. Of course these main tourist attractions are worth going to but they are of course very crowded as well. But there are so many other places in the Tokyo area that are just as cool with a lot less people. You can even say that these are some of the hidden gems of Tokyo.

There is an area that will take you back in time to the Edo period, it is called the Shibamata Taishakuten. Asakusa is a great city where you can feel the old atmosphere. It is definitely worth going to as it is like no other place in Tokyo. But it is always extremely packed with tourists that are there to see the Sensoji shrine or buying souvenirs at the market.

But about a 30 minutes ride away from Asakusa is a peaceful temple town called Shibamata and you can really get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city, When you step out of the Shibamata station there will be a tora-san statue that you will come face to face with. There is a famous film city called Otoko wa tsurai yo and this tora-san is the leading character in this series.

I would recommend going for a stroll around Taishakuten Sando and Shibamata’s Nakamise Dori. You will find lots of foods to snack on while walking around this area. Some popular food being dumplings and crackers. There will also be lots of souvenirs that you can find to take back home with you.

While walking towards the Shibamata Taishakuten you’ll come across a lot of Edo style buildings that will give you a nostalgic view. The Shibamata Taishakuten was established in 1629 and it is the grand Nichiren sect temple.

The main temple gate is absolutely beautiful with wooden carvings and when you go past that there are lots of ancient architecture that you can marvel at. Behind the main building you will find the Japanese garden.

Sugamo is another great place to visit and it is often nicknamed the Granny’s Ginza. Places like Ginza and Harajuku are shopping districts that cater to a younger audience but in Sugamo they cater to more older people. It is located at Sugamo station which is on the JR Yamanote Line and is a little bit north of Shinjuku.

It is an amazing shopping district that has over 200 shops along the Jizo Dori shopping street. There are a bunch of traditional foods and goods and hand knitted clothees along the way.

If you are looking for treats to try out while walking around then I would recommend the Shio Faifuku as this is a popular sweet in Sugamo. This is a pounded rice cake that has sweet bean paste and salt inside of it. It is a very unique treat that is loved in this area.

In the middle of the shopping area you can also go stop by at a temple called the Koganji Temple. Here you will find the famous Togenuki Jizo statue that is known for its healing powers. You will see a lot of old grannies visiting this temple.

People who come to this temple believe that if you wash your tired body or any part of the body that is in pain using the water from the fountain in front of the Jizo statue then you will be cured.

On the 4th, 14th and 24th of each month there is a small festival that takes place at the temple so the temple becomes a little more lively than usual.
