When you travel to Japan, I’m sure that almost all of you have Kyoto on your list of places to visit. And as I’m sure many of you will want to buy souvenirs for your friends and family I’ve come up with a list of some of the top souvenirs to get in Kyoto.

The first souvenir that I would recommend is an oil paper umbrella. Oil paper umbrellas are often known in Japanese as wagasa. It is believed that these oil paper umbrellas were originally brought from Korea to Japan during the Asuka period. It was initially used as a sacred instrument in the Buddhist ceremony. Then techniques in the paper production and bamboo work advanced during the Heian Period. And then wax and pigments were then added to the surface of the oil paper during the Muromachi period as a way to be more resistant to water. It then eventually became as a geisha’s tool as well. Although a lot of the oil paper umbrella markets have mostly diminished today there are still a few places in Japan that still produce it and these places include Kyoto, Gifu, Tottori and Yodoe. So if you are in Kyoto and you would like to bring something that has a strong image attached to geisha’s then this would be a good souvenir to bring home.

Tsubaki Oil is another extremely popular souvenir to buy in Kyoto. It was first founded in 1865, when this store started selling very high quality Japanese camellia oil. Today, there are many celebrities who use this oil as it is known to have an amazing moisturizing effect for both your hair and skin that will keep it glowing all day long. So if you are looking for a nice souvenir for your mother or a close girlfriend then i’m sure they will love you for this souvenir.

If you are looking for some food to bring back as a souvenir then you should definitely bring back home some wagashi which is traditional Japanese sweets. Some popular wagashi treats from Kyoto include youkan, kaintou, dorayaki, senbei and more. If you take a look around you’ll find lots of options for wagashi. And they are all very delicious so no matter which one you choose it will definitely be delicious.

Out of all of the wagashi sweets though, I will say that my number 1 favourite wagashi is warabi mochi. Warabi mochi is a jelly-like treat that is covered in toasted soybean flour that has sugar mixed in with it then on top of that there is sweet black syrup that is poured on top. The mochi itself is made from glutinous rice so it does not have much flavour but the soybean flour and syrup give it a taste and then the mochi gives it a soft and chewy texture. There are even macha flavoured warabi mochi where they make the mochi macha flavoured. They are both equally delivious and when you are in Kyoto you’ll be able to find tons of places that sell this treat. It is mostly considered as a summer treat but you can usually find it year round in certain areas of Japan. But during the summer they will have warabi mochi sold at the supermarket as well.

I’m sure that most of you know what an oil blotting sheet is. Especially if you are a woman i’m sure that you have even used these before to get the oil off the face. If you have an oily face then you know the struggles and i’m sure that you have tried many oil blotting sheets. Well, Kyoto actually has a very famous oil blotting sheet store called Yo-jiya that has been running for over 110 years. They sell some of the most high quality oil blotting sheets that are loved by women all across Japan. We all know that there are different grades of oil blotting sheets from cheap to average priced to very expensive oil blotting sheets. Well the Yo-jiya oil blotting sheets are on the expensive side but they are well worth the price. So if you are looking for oil blotting sheets for yourself, a friend or your family member then this would be a good souvenir option.
