In another blog that I wrote about the etiquettes when visiting a ryokan, a Japanese style inn. When writing that blog I realized one of the things you might want to know is how to wear a yukata. There is a yukata that is almost always provided when you stay at a ryokan and even hotels in Japan.

And as I mentioned in the other blog, people will usually wear the yukata when they are dining or when they roam around the hotel or ryokan. Not everyone does this when staying at a hotel but you will usually see everyone at a ryokan wearing a yukata.

I briefly already explained in the previous blog how to wear a yukata but here are some more detailed descriptions along with pictures to show you how it’s done.

So the first step is to put on your yukata over your underwear. Put your arms through the sleeves and then grab the front hem in each hand and hold it out at waist level.

Next you will need to fold the right hand side first and then the left on top. Make sure that the chest area is not loose.

You will then need to secure everything by wrapping the obi belt around your  waist. For men you will wrap the obi belt around your hips and for women you will need to wrap the obi belt around your waist.

The obi is to be wrapped around your back not your front. Once you have wrapper it around tie it at the front. Men will usually knot it and then tuck it in. Women can tie it in a bow.

For men it is a pretty similar step so if you follow above it it pretty much the same for men as it is for women.

Then during the winter time, since it is colder they will usually provide you with an outer jacket that is to be worn over the yukata. You can either leave it open or tie it up using the ties on the chest area.
