Top Japanese Foods To Try During Your Trip To Japan

If you are planning a trip to Japan, then as a part of your trip you’re probably wanting to eat a lot of Japanese food to get the whole Japanese experience. Wherever you are from i’m sure that you’ve had sushi, ramen and tempura as those are some of the main things that we see/eat at Japanese restaurants in foreign countries. However, there’s actually so many other Japanese foods that i’m sure you’ve never tried before that are super delicious. So i will be listing a few of the top japanese foods you should try out during your trip to Japan!

1. Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is a Japanese style savory pancake that is mainly associated with Hiroshima and Osaka. Although this dish originated in the Osaka and Hiroshima area, it can be found all across Japan. However, in most of Japan, you will find that the Osaka style okonomiyaki is served instead of Hiroshima style. The difference between the two Okonomiyaki styles is that in Osaka all of the ingredients are mixed together and then grilled but in Hiroshima instead of mixing the ingredients together they are layered and then grilled. The batter for both is most commonly made from flour, water or dashi, eggs, shredded cabbage, green onion and then you usually have a choice of meet or seafood and noodles to mix in with the batter. In Hiroshima, the batter is usually laid on the grill first in a thing layer, then the cabbage is put on top with other toppings like green onion, octopus, meat etc, then a thing layer of batter is put on top. Then with your choic of noodles, usually yakisoba, you would fry that and then once the okonomiyaki with the batter on top has been flipped over and grilled for a bit you would put it on top of the yakisoba. Next you would fry an scrambled egg on the pan and transfer the okonomiyaki onto it and then all together flip it over so that the egg layer is on top. From there, once the Okonomiyaki for both the Hiroshima and Osaka style are cooked you would put a sweet Okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, Aonori (dried seaweed), and Katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) on top as the toppings.

Udon is another popular soup noodle that is popular in Japan. It is a noodle that is made from wheat flour and is often served in a hot soup which is made from dashi, soy sauce and mirin. Depending on which part of Japan you are in the soup base will differ and the noodle consistency will differ as well. Although, it is most common to have hot udon noodles, during the summer time you will often see udon noodles served in a cold soup this is for people who want to feel refreshed during the hot humid summer days in Japan. In Japan, you will often even see restaurants that serve udon like spaghetti sauce and all types as well. Tsurutontan, which is a chain udon restaurant, is a good example of a restaurant that serves spaghetti style udon.

Karaage is basically a Japanese style fried chicken which is often served at home as well as in restaurants. This is actually quite a popular dish that is served in Japanese homes as it is delicious and pretty easy to make at home. Karaage is often made by cutting the chicken up into small bite sizes and then marinated with soy sauce, sake and mirin. It is then covered in either corn starch or potato starch before being fried. Because the chicken has already been marinated i can be served just on its own or sometimes restaurants will come up with a bunch of different sauced to accompany it.

Tonkatsu is a deep fried pork cutlet which is often served with cut cabbage, rice, pickled vegetables and miso soup. For the tonkatsu, either pork loin or pork fillet will be used and it will be seasoned, patted with a thing layer of flour and then dipped into beaten eggs and then layered with bread crumbs before being fried. There is often a tonkatsu sauce and then for those who are ok with spicy mustard it can dipped into this mustard before being eaten. Another popular way that tonkatsu is eaten is as a sandwich as it is easy to make and delicious as a sandwich.

Sukiyaki is a type of Japanese hot pot which consists of different vegetables, tofu, mushroom and sliced beed that is simmered in a pot of sauce that is mixed with soy sauce, sugar an mirin. After the vegetables, tofu, mushroom and meat has been simmered it is dipped into a fish of beaten eggs and eaten with rice. In Japan, this is a popular dish that is eaten during the winter time with friends and family. There are a bunch of different types of hot pot that are eaten in Japan and depending on the place you are in they will have their own popular main hot pot dish. Some popular hot pot dishes in Japan are Motsunabe, Ishikari Nabe, Kani Nabe, and Botan Nabe.

6. Yakisoba

Yakisoba is a Japanese style fried noodles. It looks very similar to the Chinese fried noodles, Chow mein, but it tastes completely different. Yakisoba uses wheat flour noodles and usually has cut up cabage, onions, carrots, bean sprouts with bite-sized pork. With that it is mixed in with a sauce that is similar to oyster sauce. On top, there is usually aonori, which is green seaweed powder, beni shoga, which is picked finger, and katsuobushi, fish flakes, that are places on top of the yakisoba. Yakisoba is often served at festivals in food booths but is also made at home and can be seen at local grocery stores as well. It is a very popular, easy and delicious Japanese dish.

Miso soup, which i’m sure many of you have tried before, know how absolutely delicious it is. Even in a lot of Japanese restaurants in foreign countries miso soup is almost always served. But for those of you who do not know what it is and have never tried it before then you should definitely give it a try when you go to Japan. I’m sure that there is not a single person who does not like it. Miso soup consists of a stock in which is called dashi in Japanese. From there, a miso paste is mixed in to make the soup. Depending on the region the taste of the soup and the ingredients added will differ but the most common type is the one with seaweed and tofu in it. The miso paste is basically made from fermented soybeans so it is not only very delicious but very healthy as well.

Japanese soba is a brown colored noodle which is made from buckwheat flower. Japanese soba is very similar to udon noodles in a way. They are either served with a dipping sauce or in a hot broth. Soba noodles in a hot broth soup is a dish that is often served on New years day which is a tradition in Japan. During the summer it is most common to eat soba with a side of cold dipping sauce. You will also see soba noodles served in local supermarket and also in the convenience store as well as it is a popular dish in Japan.

Gyutan is grilled beef tongue and is often served with rice, picked vegetables and soup. You will also always see gyutan on the menu at Japanese bbq restaurants. It is actually a very popular part of the meat eaten by people throughout Japan. It may sound a big gross to those who have never tried this or heard of this but it is actually one of my favorites as well. If you love meat then you must try this as i’m sure any meat lover will love it as well.

Gyoza is a Japanese style dumplings that is often filled with vegetables and ground meat and then is wrapped in a thing layer of dough. This is a very popular dish that is served in restaurants as well as at home. Depending on the restaurant the filling may differ and the way that it is cooked may different as well. There is typically three different ways to that it is cooked. One way is to pan fry it or it can be boiled or it is deep fried. But the most common way that it is cooked at home and at restaurants is pan frying it. The gyoza is then dipped into a mixture of soy sauce and vinegar with a bit of chili oil in it. Gyoza is often enjoyed along side with beer, rice and ramen.
